The Edge 540 and Edge 840 share a compact 2.6-inch transflective color display, Bluetooth, ANT+ and Wi-Fi, and a 200-hour ride history. What separates them is how you drive them and how long they last between charges.
Edge 540 uses buttons only and holds 16 GB of maps and courses. Edge 840 adds a touchscreen on top of the same button layout and doubles storage to 32 GB. Edge 840 Solar keeps the touchscreen and 32 GB and adds a solar charging lens, taking battery life from 26 hours to 32 hours — useful on long days where a mid-ride charge is not practical.
All three offer event-specific daily workout suggestions, control smart trainers, pair with power meters, and include incident detection that covers off-road riding. They mount on Garmin's quarter-turn system, so existing out-front and stem mounts carry straight over.
